Vaping - Substance Misuse Webinar for Parents

Greetings families of Charlton Public School.

Acknowledging the growing issue of vaping in our schools and the health risks associated with e-cigarettes and vaping, the YRDSB has developed the Substance Misuse Webinar: Vaping in collaboration with York Region Public Health.  By the end of this webinar, you’ll have learned valuable information about:
  • e-cigarettes, also known as vapes
  • e-juice and what it is made of
  • the safety concerns associated with vaping
  • how to discuss this substance with children.

We invite you to watch this webinar on our YRDSB YouTube Channel.  Please keep in mind that this webinar is not intended for use with students.

Due to the sensitive nature of these topics, if you or someone you know requires assistance, please remember that the following supports are available:
  • York Support Services Network (1-855-310-COPE)
  • Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868)

This is an addition to the Substance Misuse Webinar Series, created by YRDSB with our community partners.  In this series, you can learn about:

For more details on what you can do to prevent student substance misuse, please visit the YRDSB’s Caring and Safe Schools website and Vaping and E-Cigarettes subpage for resources to continue the conversation.

We hope that you have a wonderful week and thank you for supporting our safe, positive and inclusive school community.

Inclement Weather

Please remember that when an inclement weather (IW) day is called by YRDSB, that school bus and taxi services are cancelled for the entire day. The alert (below) is posted at www.yrdsb.ca. Please also remember that Charlton P.S. will still be open. If your child (ren) take the bus and you decide to drop them off for school you can do so at 8:20 am. Supervision of children does not occur before then. Pick up also needs to be on time at 3:05 pm. We do not have supervision after school hours either.

Novel Coronavirus Updated FAQ

FAQs updated:

Can students wear medical masks?

Neither students nor staff should be wearing medical masks at school. If students or staff are ill, they should be at home. Public health agencies are not recommending the wearing of medical masks, and doing so heightens anxiety, and may, in fact, increase the risk of infection in those who are using them.

Why is the school board not recommending medical masks?

Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer of Canada, cautioned of the risks of the general public wearing masks when they’re not ill. She advised that wearing masks when you’re well is not an effective measure. Sometimes it can actually present some risks, as you’re putting your fingers up and down on your face, removing your mask and putting them next to your eyes.
