Every Student Counts Survey 2023

 YRDSB Student and Family Surveys

We will be inviting all students in Grades 4-12 and students in Grades K-3 to participate in the

2022-23 Every Student Counts Survey in the Spring of 2023. Surveys will be available online

and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

You and your child should have received a letter from the Board notifying them that the survey

will be taking place. The surveys will provide the Board and our schools with valuable

information about the learning experiences of students and families this year that are used to

inform Board and school planning and to support student achievement and well-being.

Students in Grades 4-12 will be given class time to complete the survey at schools. Students in

Grades K-3 are encouraged to complete the survey at home with their family. Families who do

not want their child(ren) to be sent an invitation to participate in the survey will be given a

chance to opt their child out of receiving the survey in the new calendar year.

As our first partners in education, we value input from families and encourage parents/guardians

to complete the survey. The information provided will be confidential and kept in strict

accordance with all relevant legislation.

Please contact Research Services at research.services@yrdsb.ca if you have any questions or

visit the Board website to learn more.

Message From Our Trustee - Estelle Cohen

December 2022

I am delighted and honoured to serve as your trustee on the 2022-2026 Board of Trustees.

As a trustee, my role includes being an advocate for quality public education in York Region, and I want to assure you that I am committed to that work. Every one of our students deserves to be learning in an environment where they feel safe, valued and supported in learning and achieving success.

Part of our role as trustees includes making policy and budget decisions, and setting our priorities as an organization through a Multi-Year Strategic Plan. Our board will work hard to keep students at the centre of our decision making, and to build collaborative relationships with the families and communities we serve. The education of our students, your children, is a partnership and the relationships we have with families is an essential one.

Communicating with families and members of the public is also an important part of our role, and I look forward to connecting with members of the school community in the coming weeks and months. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I will be sharing information with you throughout the school year, and letting you know more about our work and priorities as a school board. You can also visit the board website at www.yrdsb.ca or follow on social media.

As we head into December, I also want to wish you a safe and enjoyable winter break. There are many significant dates in December for different faiths and cultures, and to all those celebrating, I wish you a happy and joyous celebration. I hope everyone has an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, relax and recharge, and we look forward to welcoming you back in January.

Best Regards,

Estelle Cohen

Edsby offers many different features that YRDSB will be rolling out over the next several years.  Some of these features include:

       Absence reporting

Appointment bookings for Parent-Teacher Interviews/Student-Led Conferences

       Program registration

       Extra-curricular Groups and Activities

Access to your child’s schedule and upcoming events.

Our school will communicate more information as features become available.

For Edsby to be effective, it contains personal information about you and your family that is collected by the Board at registration. Kiss and Ride Drop Off and Pick Up

Kiss and Ride Drop Off and Pick Up

In an effort to keep students safe and keep school traffic flowing, we are sending out an update to inform our parents and guardians about our Kiss and Ride drop off and pick up procedures.

The Bus Loop is off limits to parents and guardians that drive their children to school each day between 8 am to 8:35 am. Pylons will be placed at the entrance and exit of the bus loop to prevent access. This is important as buses have priority in our driveway loop. They have many runs scheduled after Charlton P.S. drop off and hence must stay on time and enter and exit as per their schedule. At times, buses are late arriving for a variety of reasons and the bus loop must remain clear of vehicles until well after 8:35 am.

The Kiss and Ride area is accessed by entering the parking lot entrance (as indicated on the map). Please pull as close to the curbing as possible, have your child (ren) get out and walk along the sidewalk to the school yard. Please depart promptly by looping through the parking lot so that other vehicles are able to use this space too. Parents are able to also use Joseph Aaron Blvd. and park along the curb or the school lot if they wish to escort their children onto school property. Please avoid parking in the Kiss and Ride lane if you wish to walk your children onto school property. This is a drop off only.

Parents and guardians are welcome to use our parking lot to park their vehicles if they prefer to walk their child (ren) on the yard. This will help out traffic congestion and keep it moving in the Kiss and Ride lane. Most importantly, this will keep our students and your children safe!

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Sincerely,

Mr. Brown

February 2022 – Trustee Greetings

Message from Our Trustee

Dear families,

Thank you for your patience and support as schools closed to students and we moved to remote learning in January for two weeks after the winter break, following direction from the Government of Ontario.

It has been almost two years since the pandemic was declared and schools closed to students for the first time. Since then, we have all experienced significant changes and challenges in the way we live, work and learn. As a school board, we continue to be guided by public health advice and guidelines, our values as an organization and the goals set out in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, all of which centre the well-being, learning and achievement of our students. We remain committed to sharing information with you as it becomes available. We also continue to update the Board website with resources and information, at www.yrdsb.ca/school-reopening

On the website, you can also find information about the Board of Trustees, including more about my role as your trustee, committee meeting dates, and information about public participation and how you can attend public board meetings. Following a review completed earlier this year, trustees approved some changes to committee structures and delegation process to create a stronger governance model. As a Board, we are committed to good governance, serving the needs of our community and upholding the values of York Region District School Board.

With winter well underway, I want to remind families that this year schools will close when an inclement weather day is declared. This is as a result of the pandemic and the importance of adhering to public health guidelines.

There is much to look forward to in the months ahead.

This month, students in Grades 5 to 11 will have an opportunity to vote for the students who will represent their voices next school year, during the student trustee elections. Student trustees play an important role in our system, including participating in board and committee meeting discussions. The election process also gives students an opportunity to learn more about and participate in the voting process. Learn more at www.yrdsb.ca/studenttrustees

Throughout February, we recognize Black History Month. In addition to recognizing the contributions of Black Canadians throughout history, we are continuing to Celebrate Black Excellence in our own community. I encourage you to read or watch the stories of some of the many outstanding individuals in York Region, or nominate someone. You may also be interested in some of the episodes available on our TuneIn YRDSB podcast, exploring Black History Month and beyond.

Later in February, our schools will become a sea of pink as we acknowledge Pink Shirt Day and stand together against bullying. Learn more about our work to prevent and address bullying and create equitable and inclusive learning environments.

Family Day and March Break are also approaching, and I wish you and your families a healthy, restful and enjoyable break.

As we move closer to the spring and summer months, many families who have children graduating this year are beginning to wonder what graduation ceremonies will look like in June. We all want to be able to celebrate this important milestone with our graduating students in person. It is a special occasion, recognizing their years of achievement and hard work. We recognize that it has been deeply disappointing to students, families and staff that we have not been able to hold in-person ceremonies as we have done in the past, as we adhere to health and safety guidelines. School board staff continue to meet regularly with public health and to review provincial guidelines, and as more information becomes available, we will continue to provide you with updates.

In closing, I want to acknowledge that as an education community, although we have faced many challenges and changes in the past few years, we have also seen our community come together in many ways to support our students and one another. I am proud to be part of this community and I want to thank our students, families and staff for the effort and care they have demonstrated.

David Sherman

Trustee, Markham Ward 1, Vaughan Ward 5
