CPS Office Reminders
A few friendly reminders as we enter our last 2 weeks prior to the winter break.
Please make every effort to have your children to school on time before the 8:35 a.m. bell. There has been an increased number of late students which causes many class disruptions to student learning.
Remember that changes in cold/wet weather require different layers of clothing including: gloves, hats, mitts, jackets, boots and in some cases snow pants so students can stay dry and warm. A separate pair of indoor shoes is needed during winter weather. Consider placing extra clothes in your child’s backpack so they have a back up if needed.
Don't forget to send your child with a reusable water bottle and that they pack a fork/spoon as needed for their lunch. We no longer have plastic forks or spoons.
Lastly, if you need to pick up your children during the day before regular dismissal, please call the office to advise staff. The office number is 905-738-5497 and a phone call is preferred over email, as this may get missed.

CPS School Council Gift Card Fundraiser
School Council has just launched a new gift card fundraiser for
Charlton Public School using FundScrip!
Please visit the official website here:
https://www.fundscrip.com/support-a-group/Z2VDEL
Once there, you will have to create your own
personal log-in to be able to purchase gift cards online. Choose from over 150 different retailers offering different gift card
options (with differing value amounts and available in different formats, such
as plastic, e-gift card or reloadable card). You will be able to scroll through
to see the different retailers or search for a specific one (and there are many
to choose from including gas, groceries, apparel, restaurants, etc.)
Support CPS by buying gift cards for others as gifts or buying for yourself to use
on your everyday purchases! Each gift card is assigned a cash back percentage
(the exact amount is visible on the website), which is the amount that will be
donated to Charlton Public School. You will be able to use the full amount of
the gift card purchased (ie. if you buy a $25 Indigo gift card, you will be
able to spend the full $25). The gift cards may be used in store or online (which
will be specified on the website according to which gift card you purchase).
Our fundraiser will run on an ongoing basis until May 31, 2021.
If you would like to
receive plastic gift cards before the holidays, it is recommended to place all
orders by December 8th at 6:30 am. You
may also consider purchasing an e-gift card which can be then be printed and
given as a gift.
The gift cards will be shipped directly to your
home or to any Canadian address of your choice (such as to other family members
or friends). The school will not be receiving
any orders at this time. Shipping costs $1.04 paid by the supporter at
checkout.
The shipping cost is currently
waived for orders that fall between $200-$500 (as a COVID initiative currently
offered by the company until the end of this year). Once items are added to
your cart, the shipping fee will show, however, after you proceed to checkout,
you will see that the shipping fee is waived, if applicable. If the order is
less than $200, the shipping cost of $1.04 will be applied.
There is a limit of 4 gift cards per order and a
total maximum value of $500 per order. You can place orders as often as
you like, independent of any schedule.
There are 3 payment methods available:
- Electronic
Funds Transfer (EFT) - there are no fees associated with this method. It
can be easily set up when you join through the website (it will prompt you
if you select this payment method).
- Online
Banking Bill Payment (aka Payee) - there are no fees associated with this
method. This method allows you to pay for your orders as you would pay for
any other bill. Please note that it can take at least 3 business days for
FundScrip to receive payment. (This payment method is not recommended if
you want to receive the cards before the holidays).
- Credit
card - the earnings will be reduced by 1.99% to cover fees associated with
this method of payment. (For example, if the cash back value is 10%, it
will reduce the value donated to 8.01%).
We thank you for your support.

December 2020 – Trustee Greetings from David Sherman
Dear families,
I hope that you and your loved ones are healthy and well. 2020 has been a challenging year in so many ways, and the global pandemic has affected individuals and families in different ways.
I want to reassure you that we continue to work closely with York Region Public Health and to prioritize the health and well-being of our students, staff members and families. It continues to be important that we adhere to the health and safety measures in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. You can learn more about what schools are doing at www.yrdsb.ca/school-reopening.
While we have seen cases in some of our schools, we continue to work with public health to respond quickly, identify cohorts that need to self-isolate as a precautionary measure and take all appropriate measures. I want to thank all of our students, families and staff members for their diligence in adhering to the public health recommendations and health and safety measures in place in our schools.
One of our priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan is to foster well-being and mental health. As a result of the pandemic, many of us are facing changes and new challenges that can take a toll on our mental health. It is more important than ever that we check in on one another and practice self-care. There are mental health resources for students and families on our Board website that address the unique nature of our current situation. You can also find information about our Mental Health and Addiction Strategy and the work we are doing in schools to promote positive mental health and provide support for students.
While there are challenges, we also continue to have so many reasons to feel positive. Our students continue to impress us with their kindness, creativity, innovation, resilience, courage and perseverance. Visit us on YouTube at YRDSBMedia to see just some of these stories.
In the coming weeks and months, many of our students and families will be celebrating days of significance and holidays, and I wish you all the very best for the season. While we may be celebrating a little differently this year, I hope everyone has a safe and happy winter break and we look forward to welcoming students back into our in-person and virtual schools in January.

Inclement Weather Days for the 2020-2021 School Year
For the 2020-2021 school year, the following Inclement Weather Days Interim Procedures for Elementary and Secondary Schools will come into effect. The decision to declare an Inclement Weather day will be made by the Director of Education, or Designate in consultation with appropriate staff. Staff will closely monitor the weather conditions and provide regular updates to the Director of Education, or Designate. The Director of Education or Designate is the only Board representative who may officially close a school for extreme circumstances. This year, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, our Inclement Weather Day Procedure has been adjusted based on direction from York Region Public Health. As per the IW Day Procedure #152.2, in the event school bus transportation is cancelled:
• All Face-to-Face (F2F) elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students.
• All student learning will be remote.
• Before & After programs (YMCA) will not run.
• Child Care Centres may remain open at the discretion of the operator.
• Student attendance will be recorded centrally.
Please be advised that when an IW Day is announced: information is communicated through: local media outlets, the Student Transportation Services website, School Transportation Hotline: 1-877-330- 3001, the Board’s website and Twitter account and on the Board and school’s voicemail recording. Please make sure to have alternate child care arrangements planned for IW days when schools are closed to students.

Revised School Screening Checklist

Please note that the new screening guide applies to children only and the adult screening has not changed. Thank you for working with us to protect the health and safety of students, staff and families and to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

please call the school at 905-738-5497 or login to Edsby https://yrdsb.edsby.com to

Bus Loop & Kiss and Ride at CPS
Kiss
and Ride Drop Off and Pick Up at CPS
In an effort to keep students safe and keep school traffic
flowing, we are sending out an update to inform our parents and guardians about
our Kiss and Ride drop off and pick up procedures.
The Bus Loop is off limits to parents and guardians
that drive their children to school each day between 8 am to 8:35 am. Pylons will be placed at the entrance and exit of the bus loop to prevent access. This is important as buses
have priority in our driveway loop. They have many runs scheduled after Charlton
P.S. drop off and hence must stay on time and enter and exit as per their
schedule. At times, buses are late arriving for a variety of reasons and the
bus loop must remain clear of vehicles until well after 8:35 am.
The Kiss and Ride area is accessed by entering the
parking lot entrance (as indicated on the map). Please pull as close to the
curbing as possible, have your child (ren) get out and walk along the sidewalk
to the school yard. Please depart
promptly by looping through the
parking lot so that other vehicles are able to use this space too.
Parents are able to also use Joseph Aaron Blvd. and park along the curb or the
school lot if they wish to escort their children onto school property. Please avoid parking in the Kiss
and Ride lane if you wish to walk your children onto school property. This is a
drop off only.
Parents and guardians are welcome to use our parking lot to park their vehicles if they
prefer to walk their child (ren) on the yard. This will help out traffic
congestion and keep it moving in the Kiss and Ride lane. Most importantly, this
will keep our students and your children safe!
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!
Sincerely,
Mr. Brown

Charlton Public School Staff List 2020-2021
Welcome back to everyone at CPS! We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new staff that have joined us this year. Our team has worked hard to prepare for students to return to school in classes and have participated in the required professional learning and training to start the year off safe and to engage our students in face-to-face in-class learning. Please welcome our staff when you meet them with your child(ren) tomorrow or Friday depending on the cohort they have been assigned to. Please remember to wear a mask and social distance.
Don't forget the class code assigned to your child (ren) which was communicated last week and to look for the sign outside that corresponds with that. This is where they will meet their teacher and classmates.

Safe Mask Usage by Students at School
This memo outlines additional information regarding safe mask
use for students while at school.
Students in Grades 4 to 12 are required to wear a mask and students in
Kindergarten to Grade 3 are strongly encouraged to wear a mask. The processes in this memo are based on the
following principles:
● Safe storage of the masks,
including protection of the inner layer to avoid contamination.
● Maintaining a physical
distance of two metres when not wearing a mask.
● Incorporating appropriate
mask breaks during the day.
Parents and students should remember:
● Provide multiple snug and
comfortable masks (at least 3) for
your child, so they have back-ups ready.
● We suggest separate bags to
store clean and dirty masks and a pouch or fanny pack to hold them. Wash cloth
masks daily.
Opportunities for Mask
Breaks:
York
Region Public Health recommends that students be provided time during the
school day to remove their masks to reduce mask fatigue. Teachers may consider additional times to
provide students a break from mask wearing such as:
●
Indoor gym classes where 2m physical distance can be
maintained
●
DPA outside
●
Other instructional times when staff may wish to take their
students outside. Please note that for
community walks students/staff will still be required to wear a mask and
maintain physical distancing at this time.
This
will require staff to proactively plan their day to ensure they are providing
additional opportunities for students to unmask that may be outside the regular
classroom schedule. Teachers will have
to monitor their students to determine the frequency of mask breaks.
Mask Removal for Recess
We have worked with York Region Public Health, and our regional hospital partners to develop a process that focuses on student and staff safety within the school setting. Please follow the process below when transitioning large numbers of students in and out of schools at recess time.
The process can be followed for both morning and lunch recess to provide students a mask-free time while remaining physically distant at two meters while outdoors.
- Morning Entry:
○ Students come to schools with
their masks on, which remain on until recess.
○ Students enter in a
physically-distanced manner.
- Recess Exit:
○ Students sanitize hands while
in the classroom.
○ Students who are not wearing
their mask outside are to take off their mask, fold it in half so that the
outer surface is inwards (so that the outer surface which is contaminated is
not contacting anything during storage) and store appropriately in the
classroom (e.g., in a student owned pouch or on a paper towel on their desk).
○ Staff manage the safe and
orderly student exit from school in a predetermined, physically-distanced way
(by hallway, grade, separate doors, and etc.). Please ensure that students are
maintaining the two metres physical distancing rule as they exit the classroom
and transition through school.
○ In establishing recess
routines and considering tasks such as retrieval of items from coat hooks,
etc., staff must take into account the wearing of masks or physical distancing
of two metres.
- While Outside:
○ Students are to play with
only students from their cohort and must maintain two meters physical
distancing.
○ Students should be discouraged
from entering the school during recess (e.g., washroom, drink). In emergency
situations students may seek the approval of staff to enter the building, and
staff must ensure physical distancing.
- Return from Recess
○ Students replicate the
process from before recess in reverse order and proceed directly to their
classroom. They should not be stopping to use the washroom, get a drink or
return items to their coat hooks before donning their mask.
○ When back inside the
classroom students wash or sanitize hands and put on their mask

September Back to School Family Survey
- Normal school day routine with enhanced public health protocols - Students going to school every day, in classes
that reflect standard class size regulations.
- Modified school day routine - Based on public health advice, an adapted delivery
model to allow for physical distancing and cohorts of students. Under this
model, a limit of 15 students would be maintained in a typical classroom
at one time.
- At-home learning - Should the school closure be extended, or some parents choose
not to send their child back to school, remote education will be
available.
